The York University Lions women's soccer team will take on the Algoma Thunderbirds on Saturday at York Lions Stadium in their final match of the regular season.

They will take on an Algoma team that is winless on the season, at 0-10, and has only a single goal to its credit which was scored in their season opener against the Brock Badgers on Aug. 29. The Thunderbirds as a program have lost 49 consecutive matches, their last non-loss being a 1-1 draw against the Ryerson Rams on Oct. 17, 2021. The program's last victory came back on Sept. 8, 2019: a 4-1 victory over the Windsor Lancers.

Despite those facts, the Lions will need to take the same business-like approach they do against all opponents, regardless of their record. While there isn't a playoff spot on the line in this one (York clinched a postseason berth with Brock's loss to McMaster on Wednesday night), the Lions will look to enter the postseason on a positive note ahead of Wednesday's playoff opener. To do that, taking their opponent lightly will not be an option, something that hasn't been difficult for the Lions against Algoma in recent years.

In fact, since the Thunderbirds program's inception in 2014, the Lions have never lost to the OUA's northernmost squad, going a perfect 16-0, including winning all six games over Algoma at York. Not only have the Lions won all 16 games in the all-time series, but have done so handily. York has outscored the Thunderbirds 116-1 in those games, netting an average of 7.25 goals per game and allowing just 0.06 a game.

So, while the Lions don't need to blow the visitors out of the water, the game presents a great opportunity for York to find their offensive game – an area that has been a struggle of late, having scored just twice in their last four matches – ahead of the postseason. If they can score early and often, it may be the kickstart the Lions will need to put together another playoff run and return to the OUA championship for the first time since 2022.

The Lions will recognize seven seniors in a pre-game ceremony, including Anna-Sofia Pinellis, Isabel Guido, Jasmine Broderick-Bobadilla, Dylana Makarowski, Giuliana Paolella, Brook-Lynne Mitchell and Bianca Jack. They will play their final games at York Lions Stadium, as the team looks to go out on a winning note and, with it, perhaps move up the standings and improve their seed in the opening round.

Kickoff from York Lions Stadium is set for 1:00 pm on Saturday. You can get your tickets here or stream the game live, free of charge on OUA.tv.
