The York University Lions field hockey team took on the Dalhousie Tigers in the final game of round-robin play at the 2025 Field Hockey Canada U SPORTS Invitational Championships on Saturday afternoon in Charlottetown, P.E.I. The Lions needed a win and a UPEI loss to Victoria to earn a trip back to the gold medal match on Sunday. The Tigers came in looking for their first victory of the tournament, playing in their first national tournament since 2015.

The Lions came into the event after winning the OUA Final Four and claiming the conference title with a 7-1-2 record, finishing first in the standings. Dalhousie earned their automatic bid to nationals after reaching the AUFH final against UPEI.

In the first quarter, both teams battled hard. The Lions applied a strong offensive attack that had Dalhousie scrambling. After earning a penalty corner, Katie Tye scored to give York a 1-0 lead. The Lions held most of the possession and maintained that lead through the end of the quarter.

In the second quarter, after Tye narrowly missed her second of the day, Juliet Redelaar followed up on the rebound to add a second goal for York. The Lions continued to press and carried their 2-0 lead into halftime.

York kept up their momentum in the third quarter. In the fourth minute of the frame, Jewel Lew extended the lead to 3-0. Then, in the final minutes, Redelaar struck again, scoring her second goal of the game to make it 4-0 after three.

In the final quarter, the Lions, already in control, continued to apply offensive pressure. Tye earned a penalty shot and buried it, giving York a commanding 5-0 lead. The Lions held firm until the final whistle, securing the win and advancing to the championship match.

LOOKING AHEAD:

The Lions will play for gold for a second straight year, looking for redemption and to halt the UVic Vikes six-year run as national titlists after the Vikes beat them 1-0 last year in the gold medal match. Game time is set for 1:30 pm Eastern, 2:30 Atlantic and is available on the CBC Sports YouTube channel.
