The York University Lions men's soccer team is nothing short of the Windsor Lancers kryptonite, and they get another chance to prove it Friday night in Windsor.
Since 2009, the Lancers have won only a single time against the Lions in 20 matches over that span. The Lancers lone triumph came Sept. 20, 2009 at York's Alumni Field, a 4-3 victory for the visitors. Aside from that, York has owned the Lancers, winning 15 of the next 19 matches with four draws sprinkled in.
Their last two meetings, which both came last year, sung a similar tune, with York scoring 11 goals over two matches to win 5-0 at home and 6-0 on the road. Overall, York has won 10 of the last 11 matches, with Windsor's sole consolation being a 1-1 draw on home soil in 2023.
That history – along with the fact the Lancers remain winless in 2025 – indicates the odds heavily lie in the Lions favour. However, it will be imperative for them to take care of business against a team they need to take three points from. While York's two wins have come in relatively dominant fashion, they've also lost a game and were minutes away from losing another prior to Christian Zeppieri's equalizer in the 78th minute against McMaster.
Despite perhaps a slower start to the season than they would have hoped for, there is plenty of room for the red and white to make some hay at the top of the OUA West. This game opens a stretch for York against teams they are chasing (Waterloo and Brock) or that they should beat such as Windsor, Western and Algoma.
That said, despite sitting third in the division five points back of Waterloo and three back of Brock, the Lions schedule from here on out will likely allow them to control their own destiny.
A key for the Lions against Windsor will be trying to keep their offence in check. After opening the season with a scoreless draw against the Gryphons, they've scored six goals over their last three matches, including three in the rematch with Guelph. Conversely, the Lions have only conceded four goals in four matches thus far this season. So, as the old saying goes, 'something's got to give.'
Will the Lions be able to neutralize a Windsor offence that has woken up in recent games against pretty good competition in the Gryphons and Warriors? Or will the Lancers continue their theme of scoring in bunches against one of the top teams in the OUA West?
