York University Lions women's track and field runner Alexandra Quaidoo and men's volleyball player Jasraj Nijjar have been named the latest York athletes of the week for the period ending Feb. 8.

Quaidoo, a fifth-year business and society major who has also spent five seasons with the York women's soccer team, won a pair of medals at this past weekend's Windsor Team Challenge. The Edmonton, Alta., native first took silver in the women's 4x200m relay on Friday along with veteran teammates Charlotte Murchison and Hillary Ojo, and rookie Kyla Sleath. The quartet secured the silver with a new team-best time of 1:42.10. She then followed that up with a bronze in the women's 300m race on Saturday evening with a new personal best time of 40 seconds flat to round out the podium, finishing just a half-second off the gold.

Quaidoo and the Lions now get set to compete in last chance meets at Toronto, Guelph, and Carleton this weekend ahead of the OUA championships at York from Feb. 20-21.

Nijjar, a fifth-year setter from Brampton, Ont., forever etched himself in the York men's volleyball record books in his final regular season games as a Lion. The sociology student entered last Friday's game at Western needing 37 assists to break the program's all-time record, previously held by Logan Mend at 2,467. He broke the record late in the third set, and, after earning a total of 95 assists over the Lions two games, finishes his Lions career atop the charts with 2,526 career helpers. Among those were a career best 788 assists this season, which leads all of U SPORTS heading into the final weekend of conference play.

Nijjar and the Lions will enjoy a bye week in the final week of the regular season and will await their first-round playoff opponent. With two losses by both Western (at Toronto) and Guelph (vs. Waterloo), York will host a round one game against either the Mustangs or Gryphons. Meanwhile, if one of those teams wins at least one of their final two games and the other loses both, York will finish fifth and play the team that has finishes with 13 or 14 wins. However, if both teams win at least one of their final two games, the Lions will finish sixth and travel to Queen's in Round 1.
