York University Lions basketball players Gabby Di Pietro and Jeremiah Kwarteng have been named the York athletes of the week for the period ending Feb. 15.
Di Pietro, a third-year guard from Welland, Ont., was her team's leading scorer in their upset win on Friday night over the Guelph Gryphons. The linguistics major put up 13 points to go along with seven steals, a career-high, and five rebounds. She followed up that performance with 14 points and another five boards against the Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday in the season finale, while also chipping in a pair of assists.
Di Pietro and the Lions will make the trip to Sudbury to battle the Laurentian Voyageurs in Round 1 of the OUA playoffs on Wednesday night. Tipoff is set for 7:00 pm.
Kwarteng, a third-year guard from Brampton, Ont., put up a pair of 20-point performances this past weekend as the Lions closed out the 2025-26 campaign. He scored a team-high 29 points, along with three rebounds and two assists, in the Lions hard-fought 82-78 loss to the Guelph Gryphons in the home finale. The 29 points also tied a career-high set Jan. 10 at TMU. The business administration student at York's Schulich School of Business then put up another 21 points – again a team-high – five rebounds and five steals in the season-closing contest against the Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday.
Kwarteng, a transfer from Edward Walters University in the NCAA, finishes his first season at York as the team's leading scorer, averaging 19.7 points per game.
