The York University Lions men's hockey team has solidified its commitment to promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) within the OUA. Third-year defender Lucas Eagle is at the forefront of this commitment, becoming the second Lion in as many years to earn the OUA West Division Champion of EDI Award. Established in 2022-23, the award is presented to a student-athlete, coach, support staff, and/or administrator as a mark of distinction and recognition for excellence in their work in equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives in the OUA. Eagle follows in the footsteps of former Lion Owen Gilhula, who received the honour in 2024-25.
Eagle, a student in the business & society program, has evolved into a leader for the Lions, both through his athletic performance and community impact. While appearing in all 28 regular-season games, Eagle collaborated with York students Sophia Chrisjohn Weiler and Alberta Jean Crysler-Hill through the university's Centre for Indigenous Student Services (CISS) to organize the inaugural "Honouring Culture: Indigenous Youth in Hockey" game on February 7 against the Guelph Gryphons.Â
The event placed a spotlight on the Little NHL (Native Hockey League), welcoming teams from numerous First Nations across Ontario. The ceremony also featured an Elder from Attawapiskat First Nation, who performed a prayer and honour song during a powerful on-ice pregame ceremony.
