The York University Lions field hockey team will look to go above .500 this weekend as they will host the McMaster Marauders on Saturday at Alumni Field before travelling down to Waterloo to face the undefeated Warriors.
York has had a solid start to the season currently sitting at 1-1 with a dominant win over the Guelph Gryphons 6-0 and a hard-fought 1-0 loss to the Toronto Varsity Blues on opening weekend. Kathryn Carlow, York's reigning women's athlete of the week, sits tied for first in the OUA in goals with three after netting a hat trick on Sunday against Guelph.
The Lions will face the Marauders on Saturday, a match-up in which the Lions have dominated in recent years, having won every game against the Marauders since the COVID-19 pandemic, going 4-0 in that time. Their last meeting occurred last season with the Lions emerging victorious in a 6-0 win. The Marauders have yet to score a goal so far this season with the Lions only conceding one goal across two games. The Lions have also averaged 10.5 shots a game to the Marauders two, so based on the numbers. the Lions could get a lot of chances at goal in this match.
The tougher test for the Lions this weekend comes against the Waterloo Warriors on Sunday. Waterloo comes into this one at 2-0 and has yet to allow a goal on the young season while putting seven in the back of the net on the other side of the field. Waterloo also has a league leader of their own in Femke Boland, who is currently tied with Carlow for the conference lead in goals and assists. Both Boland and Carlow will have chances to break the tie this weekend across both their schedules, but should make for an exciting match-up between two of the OUA's best. The Warriors won the matchup between these two last season but had lost the 4 previous matchups since 2020. We will find out Sunday whether the historic results prevail for York or if Waterloo starts a win streak against the Lions.
