The York University Lions tennis teams will try to end the season on a high note this Friday when they take on the Waterloo Warriors in their final matches before the OUA Championships. Friday's contests will also be the Lions senior celebrations to celebrate the athletes moving on from the team after this year.
Both athletes being celebrated come from the Men's team, Georg Zoidl, and Ahura Rezaei. Zoidl, the pride of Aurora, Ont., has been a leader and a mentor for the York Tennis Team throughout his decade of service to the Lions program, first as an integrated science undergraduate student from 2016-19 and a biology graduate student since 2020, having pursued his master's and PhD degrees. Zoidl has always been one to help out other members on the team and has made a lasting impact long past his years for the York tennis program.
Rezaei, the native of Karaj, Iran, and a biomedical science major, has always represented the York tennis program at a high level, constantly being an ambassador for the team and even helping with the teams' social accounts. has also been a constant hype man for the Tennis team, leading cheers and helping build chemistry with everyone in the program.
The men's team is looking to build on a couple of close matches over the last two weeks. In their last two games, they faced the Queen's Gaels and the Brock Badgers. Despite not coming out victorious, they gave both teams a battle, losing 4-3 in both outings. The matches against Waterloo this Friday will be the Lions' last chance to build some positive momentum before the OUA Championships next weekend in Markham.
The Lions women's team, meanwhile, has fared well so far and has an opportunity to get back to .500 with a win over the Warriors this weekend. The women find themselves with wins in two of their last four matches and a 2-3 record overall on the season. They dominated play against both McMaster and Brock, earning five wins in each of those contests. They did not fare as well against Queen's and Western, who were their two losses out of their last four matches. They will look to secure .500 record and build some positive momentum before heading into the OUA Championships next weekend.
Action from Mayfair Clubs – East, located at 160 Esna Park Dr. in Markham, begins at 6:30 p.m.
