WOMEN’S RUGBY LIONS HELP FAMILIES IN NEED

The York University Lions women's rugby team continued its impressive tradition of community service this past weekend by assisting at the Birchmount Community Centre to help make the holiday season better for families in need.

The Lions volunteered their time on Monday to the Birchmount Bluffs Neighbourhood Centre's Share Christmas program, which provides hampers to assist families in need over the holiday season. Several members of the team spent their day creating and distributing boxes full of food, clothes, hygiene products, toys, shoes, vouchers and gift cards to local families in Scarborough.

"The student-athletes on our women's rugby team never cease to impress me," said head coach Joe Costello. "I've never been able to figure out if good people play rugby or of rugby makes good people, but this is an exceptional group of young women always looking for ways to make a positive impact and it is an honour to have them represent York in such a great light."

Monday's efforts were just the next in a long line of community service projects the women's rugby Lions have taken on this past season. In October they spend a weekend volunteering at the CIBC Run for the Cure event in Toronto, and in November they hosted their annual high school tournament to benefit the Umbrella Foundation.
