York University Lions women's rugby player Mistura Are has been named an OUA athlete of the week for the period ending Sept. 27, the conference announced on Tuesday afternoon.
Are, a fourth-year flank/8 from Barrie, Ont., posted four tries for the Lions on Saturday afternoon against the Trent Excalibur as they earned their first win of the season on Senior Day at Alumni Field. The pride of Nantyr Shores S.S., who won Gold with Canada at the FISU World University Championship Rugby Sevens earlier this month, opened the scoring less than three minutes in to give York an early 7-0 lead. She added two more first-half tries to put her team out in front 28-5 at the half. She then put the game out of reach in the 66th minute with her fourth score of the contest, putting the Lions ahead 40-22 and helping seal what finished a 52-27 victory.
This announcement comes on the heels of Are being named York women's athlete of the week earlier on Tuesday in the wake of her four-try performance. That is Are's second York athlete of the week honour, the previous time for the period ending Aug. 31, 2025 following another four-try outing in last year's season opener against the Laurier Golden Hawks. Are wins the conference award for the first time in her OUA career.
She and the Lions will go for their second consecutive win Sunday afternoon when they take on the Waterloo Warriors at 1:00 p.m from the twin cities.
