FORMER YORK TRACK AND FIELD ATHLETE MAKES BOBSLED HISTORY

Former York University Lions track and field student-athlete Cynthia Appiah was part of the Canadian team that made bobsled history this past weekend as the first all-female team against men in a four-person World Cup bobsled race.

The sled, which was driven by two-time Olympic champion Kaillie Humphries, finished 17th in the 17-sled field at the event in Lake Placid, N.Y. The team also included Geneviève Thibault, who, like Appiah is a former CIS track and field athlete as a sprinter with the Laval Rouge et Or, and Melissa Lotholtz.

Before switching to bobsled, Appiah was a standout thrower for the Lions track and field team for five seasons. Throughout her career (2008-13), she won five CIS medals and six OUA medals and was named York's female athlete of the year in 2013. She was the OUA champion in the weight throw in 2011, won three CIS silver medals in the shot put and another in the weight throw, and overall was a four-time CIS all-Canadian and three-time OUA all-star.
