LIONS SET TO FACE RIDGEBACKS IN SEASON OPENER FOR BOTH TEAMS

The York University Lions women's hockey team welcomes the UOIT Ridgebacks to Canlan Ice Sports on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 15) for the season opener for both teams.

Last Meetings
The Lions and Ridgebacks split their season series last year, with the home team winning by a single goal in each contest. UOIT took the first game by a 3-2 score in the season opener, and later in the year the Lions won 2-1 in a shootout on home ice.

  • The Lions played nine pre-season games and went 5-3-1, including victories over Ottawa, Carleton, Nipissing, Laurentian and Toronto. They outscored their opponents 16-7 in those five wins.
  • The Lions finished 10th in the OUA last season and missed out on one of eight conference playoff spots by five points. Their 27 points last year was two more than the 25 they put up the previous year.
  • As part of opening weekend, the Lions will also travel to Kingston, Ont., on Sunday to face the Queen's Gaels in a game that begins at 3pm.
 
UOIT
  • The Ridgebacks played fine pre-season games and went 1-3-1, with their lone win coming in their most recent contest by a 1-0 score over Ryerson. They also travelled out east for a trio of games against St. Thomas, UPEI and St. Mary's, falling by scores of 2-1 (overtime), 4-2 and 3-2.
  • The Ridgebacks finished 12th in the OUA last year with 23 points, a seven-point improvement over their record from the previous season but still not enough to claim a playoff spot.
  • UOIT will also play its home opener this weekend, hosting the Nipissing Lakers on Sunday afternoon at their Campus Ice Centre.
 
PLAYERS TO WATCH
 
York
 
F Chelsea Tucker – Led the Lions in total points (12) and assists (11) last season. She was tied for 16th in the OUA in assists and more than doubled her point total from her rookie season.
 
F Amy Locke – The team captain this season, she was second in Lions scoring last year with 11 points and first in goals (eight), a new career high.
 
UOIT
 
LW Samantha Forchielli – Led the Ridgebacks in scoring last year with 14 points (three goals, 11 assists).
 
D Jenna Carter – Was UOIT's highest scoring defender last season with seven points (five goals, two assists), putting her sixth overall on the team. She also led the Ridgebacks with three power play goals.
