LIONS CONTINUE HOME SLATE AGAINST VOYAGEURS AND LAKERS

The York University Lions women's hockey team is back in action on home ice at Canlan Ice Sports this weekend with a pair of games against their northern rivals in the Laurentian Voyageurs and Nipissing Lakers.

Last Meetings
The Lions defeated the Voyageurs 3-0 in a preseason contest earlier this year. They also won the first meeting between the two squads last season, posting a 5-3 win over a Laurentian team that was ranked No. 10 nationally at the time. The Voyageurs won the second meeting 3-2 on home ice. The two teams will face off in February in Sudbury, Ont.
 
The Lions played the Lakers twice in the preseason, splitting the two contests with a 2-0 loss at home and a 4-2 win in North Bay, Ont. The Lakers swept the season series between the two teams last season, shutting out the Lions 3-0 at Canlan and winning 3-2 on home ice. The two squads will meet again at Nipissing on the last weekend of the regular season in February.

  • The Lions have two wins in their first four games, including a 3-2 overtime victory over the Ryerson Rams in their most recent contest last Sunday. They also earned a 4-1 triumph over the UOIT Ridgebacks in their season opener.
  • The team's eight goals in four games is tied for the sixth best mark in the OUA.
  • The Lions finished 10th in the OUA last season and missed out on one of eight conference playoff spots by five points. Their 27 points last year was two more than the 25 they put up the previous year.
 
 Laurentian
  • The Voyageurs began the year with a 5-0 loss to the nationally-ranked Guelph Gryphons but have since won two in a row. They defeated the Windsor Lancers 5-2 and the Western Mustangs 4-2 at home last weekend.
  • Laurentian's nine goals scored this season is tied for the third best total in the OUA.
  • After facing the Lions on Saturday afternoon, the Voyageurs will head to St. Catharines, Ont., for a game against the Brock Badgers on Sunday.
 
Nipissing
  • The Lakers are the only undefeated team in the OUA, sporting a 3-1-0-0 record to start the season. Their 11 points are three clear of the rest of the field. Last weekend they defeated Windsor 3-1 and blanked Western 2-0.
  • The Lakers lead the OUA in goals scored with 14, three more than any other team in the conference.
  • As part of their weekend schedule, the Lakers will also be in St. Catharines, Ont., on Saturday afternoon for a gam against the Badgers.
 
PLAYERS TO WATCH
 
York
 
F Erin Locke – Leads the Lions and is tied for fifth in the OUA with four points (two goals, two assists). As a rookie last year she tied for second in team scoring with 11 points.
 
F Dana Somerville – The fifth-year veteran scored the shootout winner and added a goal in regulation against Ryerson. It was her first point of the young season.
 
Laurentian
 
F Ellery Veerman – Leads the Voyageurs and is tied for fifth in the OUA with four points (three goals, one assist) this season. She has scored once on the power play and once shorthanded.
 
F Taylor Weber – Scored the game winner in the upset victory over nationally-ranked Western last week. She has two points (one goal, one assist) this season, both coming in the game against the Mustangs.
 
Nipissing
 
F Bronwyn Bolduc – Is tied for the OUA lead in scoring with six points, and also leads the OUA with four goals scored this season. One of her goals came on the power play and she also has two game winners, against Queen's and Windsor.
 
F Samantha Strassburger – Tied with teammate Bolduc for the OUA lead in scoring with six points. She also has five assists, the most in the conference.
