Former York Lions wrestler Alexandria Town competed in her first senior world wrestling championships in Budapest, Hungary this week and placed 12
th in her weight class.
Â
Town, who was recently named an assistant coach with the Lions wrestling program, competed in the 57kg weight class and started the tournament well beating her opponent by a score of 10-0 in her opening match.
Â
However she was defeated 10-0 eventual silver-medalist Bulgaria's Bilyana Dudova in the quarterfinals and found herself competing against in a repechage bout with Romania's Kateryna Zhydachevska for a spot in the bronze medal match. At one point in the match she was up 9-4 on her opponent, but Zhydachevska capitalized on a mistake and pinned Town to pick up the victory and advance in the tournament.
Â
The Scarborough, Ont. native had an impressive 2018 leading up to the world championships which included winning silver medals at the OUA and U SPORTS championships, bronze medals at a Canada cup event and the senior Pan American championships, a senior national championships victory, a gold medal at the Canadian national team trials and a silver medal at the FISU World University Wrestling championships in September.
Â
There won't be any break for the burgeoning international star, as Town will compete at the under-23 world wrestling championships in Bucharest, Romania from Nov. 12-18, her third world championship event in the last three months.
Â
Town spent four years with the Lions and is the most decorated women's wrestler in York program history. She competed in three seasons after an injury wiped out her third year, and won three OUA medals (two silvers, one bronze) and two U SPORTS medals (one silver, one bronze) while becoming York's first women's wrestling all-star and all-Canadian. She was also one of the most engaged student-athletes at York and was honoured for her efforts with a prestigious Lions Legacy Award at the conclusion of the 2017-18 school year.
