It was a successful day for the York University Lions wrestling teams, as Bailey Agard and Paul Nguyen came away on top, capturing gold medals at the Ryerson Open this past Saturday.
Â
Competing in the men's 54kg category, Nguyen was able to defeat Dip Lad of Team Xtreme, and Lakeheads' Hasan Ercan on his way to the top of the podium. The second-year wrestler was flawless in his quest for gold, not giving up a single point in any of his rounds.
Â
Not to be outdone herself, Agard was dominant in her 4 matches in the women's 51kg category, going undefeated in the process. This is her second gold and third medal overall this season, highlighting and already impressive rookie campaign.
Â
Just missing the podium were Dennis Chvedov, and Josh Malu, who both placed fourth in the men's 76kg and 57kg categories respectively, while Gurleen Tak was also fourth in the women's 48kg. Other Lions results included Christelle Lans in fifth place in the women's 67kg category and Gurnek Tak in sixth place in the men's 61kg category.
Â
The Lions will look to continue their success at home this weekend, as they host their annual York Open tournament at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
