The York University Lions wrestling teams took advantage of home mat, coming away with four bronze medals as they hosted their annual York Open meet on Saturday, Nov. 17.
Finding the podium and claiming bronze medals for the men were Paul Nguyen in the 54kg category, and Josh Malu in the 57kg category. Coming off a podium finish just last weekend, Nguyen was able to continue his medal-winning form, defeating London Western's Reeve Boule with a decisive 10-0 win in the bronze medal match-up. Malu also proved formidable, as he made quick work of University of Alberta's Valdes 10-0, setting him up to win a nail-bitter of a match against Brody Collison of Algoma University, 9-7 for the bronze medal.
On the women's side, familiar faces made their way to the podium, as both Bailey Agard and Christelle Lans were able to secure bronze medals in the 48kg and 67kg categories respectively.
After falling to eventual gold medallist Jade Dufor of Concordia in her opening round, Agard dominated her remaining opponents by a relentless score of 10-0, defeating Riley Tubaro of Algoma University, and Cristal Reyes of Springfield Tech College, securing a bronze medal in the process. Lans followed a similar story, after dropping her first match. She went on to defeat Western's Cat Blair, and Savannah Maclachan of UNB 10-0. This is Lans' first podium finish in only her second meet of the season, and the team will be looking for more of the same from last years OUA bronze medallist.
Also competing for the Lions were Gurleen Tak who finished 4th in the 48kg, Dennis Chvedov who finished 5th in the 69kg category, and Anton Smyrnov who placed 6th overall in the 68kg category.
The Lions will look to carry their momentum forward into this weekend as they head to Guelph for their last meet until the new year.
