York University Lions wrestlers Alexandria Town and Christelle Lans will compete for national medals this weekend as the 2018 U SPORTS championships are set to take place at Algoma University in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.
 
Town will be in the 59kg weight class after winning the OUA silver medal in the same division two weeks ago, while Lans will compete in the 72kg division following an impressive bronze-medal showing as a rookie at the OUA championships.
 
Town is the greatest women's wrestler in York's short history in the sport. She is a three-time OUA medallist, winning York's first conference medal in women's wrestling in 2015 – a silver in the 51kg weight class – and also won the first and only national medal for the program, a bronze at 55kg in 2016. She returns to the U SPORTS championships this year after missing all of last season with an injury.
 
Earlier this year she ranked No. 1 in U SPORTS in her weight class and remains in the top three after her showing at the conference championships, where she just missed out on the top of the podium with a narrow loss to her closest rival, Hannah Taylor from the Brock Badgers. Town beat Taylor en route to the York Open gold medal back in November and was also a bronze medallist at the Commonwealth Games trials in the fall. The two appear poised to another showdown this week in northern Ontario.
 
Lans, meanwhile, will cap off her solid debut season with an appearance at the national meet, where she has been ranked No. 5 in U SPORTS. She won multiple medals at regular-season tournaments throughout the year, including a silver at the Western Open and a bronze at the Brock Open.
 
Her bronze at the OUA championships made her just the second conference medallist from the York women's wrestling program.
 
Weigh-ins will take place on Thursday afternoon, with the opening matches set for Friday and the medal matches taking place on Saturday.
