TOWN STRIKES GOLD FOR CANADA AT PAN-AM CHAMPIONSHIPS

Former York University Lions wrestler Alexandria Town showcased her talents on the international stage Saturday, taking home a gold medal for Canada at the Senior Pan American Championships.

The 24-year-old won all three of her matches by technical superiority, ousting opponents from Brazil, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. She won all three matches by 10 or more points.

Towns wrestled in the 59 kg division, and her gold medal was the first for Canada at the Pan-Am Championships. The tournament ran Mar. 6-9 in Ottawa.

The former Lion is the most decorated women's wrestler in York program history. She is concentrating on qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics this year after a productive 2018 that saw her finish in 12th place at her first senior world championships and win Canada's first-ever gold medal at the U23 world championships.

As a Lion, Town won three OUA medals (two silvers, one bronze) and two U SPORTS medals (one silver, one bronze) while becoming York's first women's wrestling OUA all-star and U SPORTS all-Canadian. She was also one of the most engaged student-athletes at York and was honoured for her efforts with a prestigious Lions Legacy Award at the conclusion of the 2017-18 school year.
