York University Lions women's wrestler
Alexandria Town continued her stellar summer by winning the bronze medal at the Canada Cup in Guelph, Ont., over the weekend.
Â
Competing in the 57kg weight class, Town pinned Amy Bellavia of the University of Calgary in the bronze medal match to reach the podium with a 5-0 win. Her only loss of the tournament came against Irina Ologonova of Russia who is currently the number one ranked wrestler in the world. Town and Ologonova had an exciting back and forth match that was decided in the last 30 seconds, with the match ending with Ologonova on top by a score of 12-10. Town won two other matches earlier in the tournament, both by a score of 10-0.
Â
Town, who is set to graduate from York this summer, spent four seasons with the Lions and is the most decorated women's wrestler in York program history. She has successfully entered the international stage over the last few months by winning her first international medal, a bronze at the Pan Am Championships in Peru in May, and qualifying for the 2018 world championships by winning the 57kg weight class at the Canadian national team trials last month. The 2018 world championships will be held in Budapest, Hungary in October.
Â
Town wasn't the only Lions wrestler to medal over the weekend as
Christelle Lans went undefeated in winning the gold medal at the Ontario Cup. Lans was dominant as she defeated her opponent twice by a score 10-0 in a best of three series to win the event. She is coming off an excellent rookie season with the Lions that saw her win the bronze medal at the OUA championships and finish in sixth place at the U SPORTS championships.
