TOWN CROWNED CANADIAN SENIOR NATIONAL CHAMPION

York University Lions wrestler Alexandria Town won the gold medal in the 57kg weight class at the Canadian senior national championships in Montreal this past weekend.

Town began the meet in impressive fashion, taking down her fiercest rival, Hannah Taylor from the Brock Badgers, with a tech fall by a score of 12-1. She followed that up with tech fall victories over Hannah Franson and Chantal Pasion, and secured the gold medal in the final round by defeating Cara Nania in a narrow decision by a score of 10-6.

Her performance also earned her the outstanding senior women's wrestler award at the conclusion of the meet.

Town recently completed her third season with the Lions and continued to put her name into the school record books. The most decorated female wrester in York history won the silver medal in the 59kg weight class at the OUA and U SPORTS championships, the best finish ever for a Lions women's wrestler. She also earned OUA all-star and U SPORTS all-Canadian honours, becoming the first women's wrestling all-Canadian in program history.

Town has now earned a place on the Canadian national team and will represent her country at the Pan Am Championships in Lima, Peru, in May.
