TOWN WINS BRONZE AT SENIOR PAN AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

York University Lions wrestler Alexandria Town won the bronze medal in the 57kg weight class at the senior Pan American Championships in Lima, Peru, on Saturday.

The four-year member of the Lions was competing in her first international meet and found her way to the podium with an impressive day of performances.

She began the tournament with a dominant 10-0 win over Eva Gonzalez Landazury from Colombia in the quarter-finals, before a narrow 8-5 loss to Alejandra Romero Bonilla from Mexico in the semifinals. She bounced back in the bronze-medal match, however, with another 10-0 victory, this time over Dominica's Yessica Oviedo Perez.

Town qualified for the meet after winning the gold medal at the Canadian senior national championships in March, her first national title.

She is the most decorated women's wrestler in York program history and was honoured with a Lions Legacy Award at the end of her final season last month. Throughout her three years of competing, she won three OUA medals, two U SPORTS medals and was York's first medallist, OUA all-star and U SPORTS all-Canadian.
