Box Score 2 The York University Lions field hockey team opened the 2018 season at home with a big win and a tie on Sunday, defeating the McGill Martlets 9-0 and tying 1-1 against the Guelph Gryphons.

Zeeshan Minhas said before the season that he has high expectations for the predominately young squad and they did not disappoint. The Lions have started off the season strong with 10 goals in the first two games. Â

The Lions played their first game of the day against the Guelph Gryphons.
Frankie St. Louis assisted rookie forward
Chloe Walton's goal in the 20
th minute, her first goal as a York Lion to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. The Gryphons reacted quickly evening the score in the 30
th minute at 1-1. The Lions recorded three shots in the first half and four shots in the second.

Jaslan Stirling, the leading goal scorer in the OUA during the 2017 season, had an impressive game against the Martlets, scoring four goals for the Lions. Stirling was the first one on the score sheet two minutes into the first half, and scored her other three goals in the 37
th, 52
nd, and 62
nd minutes.
Chloe Walton added another two goals in the 15
th and 18
th minute, while
Sydney McFaul,
Kyra McKinnon, and
Sara Vollmerhausen each scored a goal to cap the game at 9-0. The Lions recorded 25 shots on goal.

The Lions travel next weekend to play a series of three games. The first one is being held on Saturday in London, Ont., against Queen's Gaels at 12:30pm. The following day the Lions will head to Guelph, Ont., to face the Waterloo Warriors at 10:45am and the Western Mustangs at 2:15pm.
