The York University Lions field hockey team will look to keep their winning streak alive as they head into a double-header this weekend. The Lions are coming off two strong showings last weekend when they faced off against the Western Mustangs and the Queen's Gaels. Both games were close, hard-fought contests with the Lions securing one-goal victories in both games.
York has started to find their stride, as they have now won four-straight games and are unbeaten in seven straight. The Lions are now creeping on the Warriors place in first with a matchup pending this weekend.
Firstly, York will face off against the Marauders. When these two teams played earlier this season, York was able to get the better of McMaster, defeating the Marauders 3-0. York absolutely dominated play in this one as they had 13 shots with 11 on net compared to McMaster, who did not register a single shot in the game. Another dominant performance like that, and the Lions should extend their win streak to five games.
Next, York will face off against the Waterloo Warriors, in a battle for the top of the OUA. Currently, Waterloo sits 6-0-2 while York sits 6-1-1. A win for either side would give them first place in the conference with one weekend left to play before playoffs. Last time these two teams faced off earlier this season, York absolutely dominated play. The Lions would register 18 shots total with 16 of them on net compared to Waterloo only registering one shot total with it also being on net. Waterloo would capitalize on their only shot as it would find the back of the net giving the Warriors a 1-0 lead. York would eventually bury one of their 16 shots on net, but no more than once, as the game finished in a 1-1 draw. That draw now sets up what could very well be a game to decide who will host the OUA Championships later this month, although both teams will still have two more games to play outside of this one.
A win in both games would set up the Lions nicely going into playoffs and would extend their winning streak to six games.
The Lions will play in Hamilton on Saturday, October 10
th at 1 PM EST. York will then host Waterloo at York's Alumni Field on Sunday, October 11
th, with that game also slated to start at 1 PM EST. Admission is free for the match at Alumni Field and doors will open around 12 PM EST, roughly an hour before game time.
