LIONS NAME TOWN ASSISTANT COACH OF WRESTLING TEAM

The York Lions wrestling program added one of the Lions all-time greats to their coaching staff on Monday, as head coach Eamonn Dorgan announced that Alexandria Town has been named as an assistant coach with the team.

"This is a very exciting time for our program," said Dorgan. "Alexandria is in the process of competing at three World Championships within three months. We are lucky to have her share this wealth of experience with our athletes and we have a number of high quality recruits that Alexandria will serve as an excellent role model. With the trail blazing path that she has set and our recruits potential I can promise we will see more OUA and U SPORTS medals as well as future national and international medals. It bodes well for our program to have someone of Alexandria's caliber to train and coach in our program. She has her 2020 vision set on the Olympics which is going to help raise the bar for all of us in the varsity wrestling program."

Town graduated from York with a degree in kinesiology & health science over the summer and finished up her university wrestling career with a silver medal at the FISU World University Wrestling championships in the 57-kilogram weight class on Sept. 8.

"This is an exciting transition for me and I couldn't be happier to remain involved with the varsity team and help continue its development," said Town. "York's wrestling program brought me to my current level of success as a member on Team Canada. I'm glad I can now give back to the program by sharing what I've learned through all my wrestling experiences."

The Scarborough, Ont. native has had an impressive 2018 year which includes winning silver medals at the OUA and U SPORTS championships, bronze medals at a Canada cup event and the senior Pan American championships, a senior national championships victory and a gold medal at the Canadian national team trials. She will next compete at the senior world championships, which will take place in Budapest, Hungary from Oct. 20-28.

Town spent four years with the Lions and is the most decorated women's wrestler in York program history. She competed in three seasons after an injury wiped out her third year, and won three OUA medals (two silvers, one bronze) and two U SPORTS medals (one silver, one bronze) while becoming York's first women's wrestling all-star and all-Canadian. She was also one of the most engaged student-athletes at York and was honoured for her efforts with a prestigious Lions Legacy Award at the conclusion of the 2017-18 school year.
