Box Score 3 The York University Lions field hockey team kept up their stellar season and stayed undefeated with two wins over the Guelph Gryphons and the Queen's Gaels, and a tie against the Toronto Varsity Blues over the weekend.
The Lions opened up the action against the Varsity Blues on Saturday morning, competing to steal the spot from the top team in the OUA division. The two teams, who are both undefeated this season, played a tough match that ended with a 0-0 tie. With the tie, the Lions stayed two points behind the Blues for first place.
The Lions continued the action later that day, defeating the Guelph Gryphons with a 2-0 win.
Natalie Maw was able to find the back of the Gryphons' net in the 16
th minute for a 1-0 lead.
Prava Sandhu scored the second and last goal of the match in the 49
th minute to secure the win for the Lions.
The following day, the Lions had an impressive 5-0 win against the Queen's Gaels.
Jaslan Stirling who has been recently named York athlete of the week, OUA athlete of the week, and U Sports athlete of the week, scored another hat trick to increase her goal total to 13 on the season. Stirling found the back of the net in the 28
th, 48
th, and 49
th minute. In the 52
nd minute,
Frankie St. Louis was also able to get a goal past the Gryphons' goalie to increase the lead to 4-0.
Amber Sandhu beat the whistle scoring the final goal of the game in the 70
th minute.
The Lions are travelling on Oct. 3 with hopes to clinch first place as they play another big game against the Toronto Varsity Blues. The game is scheduled to start at 8pm.
