Members of the York Lions wrestling team competed in the 2019 Ontario Junior Wrestling Championships over the weekend in London, Ont., and brought home one gold medal and three silver medals.

Lions rookie Bailey Agard led the way with a gold medal in the women's 53kg division. Agard defeated Brooke Fletcher of the Windsor Lancers by a dominating score of 10-0 in the final round to reach the top step of the podium. Agard has now medaled in all six tournaments she's competed in for the Lions this season in what has been an outstanding rookie campaign for the Cognitive Science major.

The men's wrestling team also had a successful weekend earning three silver medals. In the men's 54kg category, Paul Nguyen went 3-1 in his matches en route to finishing in second-place. He defeated Mahmood Ahmmad in the opening round via pin just 50 seconds into the match and then fell to eventual gold medalist Josh Rimando of the Guelph Gryphons in the second round. He rebounded to defeat Reeve Houle of the Matmen WC in the third round via pin at 2:13, and dominated Joel Swarath of Forest City WC 10-0 in the final round to earn the silver medal.

Nashane Ralph's path to his silver medal in the men's 65kg division included defeating Samual Lockie of the Lakehead Thunderwolves by a 14-6 decision in his opening round. Ralph then lost to gold medalist Xavier Gaines of the Matmen WC in the gold medal final by a score of 16-5. Dennis Chvedov rounded out the Lions medalists this weekend with a silver in the men's 79kg category. Chvedov defeated Alex Kehn of the Sarnia Bluewater WC in the quarterfinals (10-0) and Hunter Tandy of the host Western Mustangs (12-2) to reach the final where he was defeated by Ismail Ayyoud of the National Capital WC by a score of 13-2.

Other Lions competing this weekend were Christelle Lans (Women's 68kg) and Trevonn Paul (Men's 65kg) who both finished in fifth-place respectively in their divisions.

The Lions wrestling team has a big week ahead as they'll be competing in the OUA Wrestling Championships next weekend in Guelph, Ont. The tournament kicks off on Friday, Feb. 1 and will be completed on Saturday, Feb. 2.
