On Saturday, the York University Lions women's rugby team defeated the Trent Excalibur at Alumni Field with a final score of 45-12.
Â
The Lions came out strong in the first five minutes with a try and a conversion from
Natasha Naismith, giving the Lions an early 7-0 lead. Seven minutes later the Lions scored another try, this time from
Bernice Ediagbonya, followed by another conversion from Naismith.
Â
Trent continued to play hard and were rewarded with a try of their own from Maddy Howells but failed to score the conversion cutting the Lions lead down to nine. York went on to score two more tries before the end of the first half. The first from
Chanelle Lindegaard in the 31st minute, and the second from
Lauryn Legerton four minutes later.
Â
Just before half Trent came back with a try from Caleigh McMillian, followed by a conversion from Abigale Struyk, ending the first with a score of 26-12.
Â
The second half started in the same fashion as the first. The Lions came out dominant and scored a try early in the 47th minute thanks to newly named OUA All-Star,
Selena McCuaig. This was followed by another try 10 minutes later from
Erin Preston. In the closing minutes of the match, Ediagbonya scored her second try, followed by another conversion for Naismith, giving her five in the game, closing the game out with a final score of 45-12.
Â
The women took absolute control of the second half by not allowing the Excalibur to score.
Â
The consolation win gives the Lions plenty to look forward to, as they clinched the final spot that will allow them to move up into the Shiels division for the 2020 OUA regular season.
