On Saturday night, the York University Lions Men's hockey team dropped their season opener 5-3 against the Toronto Varsity Blues at Varsity arena.
The first period opened in favour of the Lions with an unassisted goal from forward
Benjamin Evanish in the first 2 minutes of the game. However, the Varsity Blues were quick to respond with four goals.
The first goal was from forward Scott Krinton, assisted by David Thompson in the third minute. Forward Ross Krieger scored the second goal, assisted Kyle Potts and Nathan Hudgin in the 8
th minute. Defenseman, Evan MacEachern scored the third goal assisted by Steve Elliott and Kevin Lavoie, and the last goal from the Varsity Blues in the first quarter from forward Kyle Clarke helped by Hunter Fargey and Curtis Harvey.
The first period ended with a score of 4-1 for the Varsity Blues.
The Lions aimed to come back in the second period and score. They were not disappointed with a lone goal from forward
Nik Coric assisted by
Brendan Browne and
Justin Bean in the 9
th minute of the second period. The lions were still trailing the Blues by a score of 4-2 at the end of the second period.
The third period kicked off with another goal from the Varsity Blues. Forward David Thompson scored in the 7
th minute, but the Lions answered back with a powerplay goal from forward
Morgan Messenger assisted by Coric and
Scott Feser in the final minutes of the game.
With the disappointing loss the Lions will look to get into the win column when they play against the Brock Badgers next Friday in St. Catharines, Ont. at 7:15pm.
