LIONS DEFEND HOME TURF AT YORK OPEN, CREW SETS NEW SCHOOL RECORD IN WEIGHT THROW

It was a successful weekend for the York University Lions track & field team at the 48th annual York Open at the Toronto Track & Field Centre, as the team earned ten podium finishes.

Thrower Brittany Crew led the way with a new school record of 19.80m in the weight throw, erasing her own record of 19.38m she set in 2015. The mark leaves her as the number one-ranked thrower in U SPORTS and she's on track for another dominant season at the OUA and U SPORTS championships. She also continued her dominance in the shot put event, winning with a throw of 17.16m.

On the track, the York lions relay teams had a dominant meet, with the 4x200m women's relay team of Mikeisha Bobb, Christy Ihunaegbo, Marvelous Agbonwaneten and Diana Boa winning gold in a time of 1:42.42 which is a new season's best. The men's 4x200m relay team of Daniele Orsini, Mark Hutchinson, Tohma Van Bergen and Quinn Charles also won the gold with a time of 1:31.71, and the Lions "B" team of Brandon Shokour, Demari Grant, Majeed Zabsonere and Sodiq Ibrahim won the bronze medal in a time of 1:33.77.

The women's 4x400m relay team Nicolette Witherspoon, Zakiya Taverneir, Inhuneagbo and Bobb won gold in a time of 3:55.80 and the women's 4x800m relay team led by Meaghan Kelly, Anna-Kay Green, Katrianna Pisani and Rebecca Wheeler followed suit with a win in a season's best time of 10:14.65. Led by Philip Costa, Ali Abdiaziz, Joshua Ching and Lofo-John Kitoko, the men's 4x800m relay claimed the silver in another season's best time of 8:11.49 respectively.

Elsewhere on the track, Ihunaegbo won the women's 300m event with a time of 39.23secs and remains ranked number one in U SPORTS. Zeon Bass claimed the silver medal in the men's 300m event with a time of 35.97secs, while Pierce LePage ran only in the preliminary round of the 60m hurdles event, but his time of 8.09 seconds qualified him for the U SPORTS championships and ranks as the fastest time in university sport in the event so far this season.

In total the team earned six gold medals, two silver medals and two bronze medals. The Lions achieved a total of 14 season's best performances, five personal best results, three U SPORTS qualifying marks and 37 OUA qualifying marks.

The Lions will be back in action next weekend at the Spire NCAA D1 Indoor Invitational in Geneva, Ohio. They will be back in action at the Toronto Track & Field Centre on Feb. 22-23 when they host the best the OUA has to offer at the 2019 OUA track & field championships.
