The York University Lions track and field team came away from the annual Can Am Classic with six medals after a successful weekend of competition in Windsor, Ont.
Leading the way was thrower
Holly Taylor, who finished atop the podium in the shot put with a personal-best distance of 13.56m, finishing just ahead of the silver medallist. Taylor also competed in the weight throw, an event she was undefeated in prior to the weekend, and finished in fifth place with a throw of 14.97m.
Three Lions won silver medals at the meet, led by pole vaulter
Daniel Gleason. The fifth-year athlete, in his first year at York after four seasons with the Western Mustangs, surpassed 4.92m in the event to finish in second place. The height was also good enough to qualify him for the U SPORTS championships in March.
Olivia Henry and
Leah Jones both posted big performances in the triple jump and long jump, respectively, to win silver medals. Henry's distance of 11.63m put her three centimetres ahead of the bronze medallist, while Jones finished second in the long jump with a distance of 5.59m. Henry also competed in the long jump, finishing 14
th.
Rounding out the podium performances were
Emmanuel Nketiah and
Drew Erskine, who each won a bronze medal. Nketiah finished third in the triple jump with a leap of 14.01m, one of only three athletes to reach the 14-metre mark in the event. Erskine, meanwhile, was third in the weight throw with a toss of 14.53m.
The Lions will stay local this weekend and head downtown to the University of Toronto for the annual Fred Foot Invitational, beginning Friday.
