The York University Lions track and field team headed downtown to the University of Toronto's Athletic Centre for the Fred Foot Memorial meet on Friday and Saturday while the pole vaulters were across the border for the pole vault summit in Reno, Nevada.
The Lions ended the weekend with 15 podium finishes.
Holly Taylor finished with two first-place results, throwing 13.99m in the shot put, which was not only a massive personal best but also the auto qualifying standard for the U SPORTS championships. Taylor now moves up to the second spot in the national rankings, right behind teammate
Kaitlin Brooks.
Taylor also took the gold in the weight throw with a distance of 15.34m while teammate
Thyra Mbiro finished second with a personal best of 11.02m.
Drew Erskine took the gold medal in the weight throw with a season's best effort of 15.65m, followed by teammate
Jonathan Raspanti, who threw a season's best performance of 14.78m for the silver. They both move up to the top ten in the U SPORTS rankings.
In the 60m hurdles,
Heniesha Christie ran a season's best 9.34 in the preliminary round and finished with a bronze medal in the finals with a 9.66.
Zakiya Tavernier finished second in the 300m with a personal best of 40.34.
In the 3000m, rookie
Carmen Krawczynski Gonzalez crossed the finish line ahead of the pack as she placed first with a time of 10:27.15, which was a massive personal best as well as an OUA auto-qualifying time.
In the pit, long jumper
Leah Jones jumped onto the top of the podium with a 5.98m leap, matching her indoor personal best. Teammate
Olivia Henry did not finish too far behind Jones with a fourth-place finish and a jump of 5.43m. Henry also jumped an 11.64m in the triple jump, helping her remain amongst the top 10 in the U SPORTS rankings.
Rookie
Isaac Gaudreau also took the gold medal in the men's 60m hurdles with a personal best time of 9.40.
Veteran
Zeon Bass found himself on the podium in second place in the men's 300m with a time of 36.27 while
Abdiaziz Ali took the bronze in the men's 1000m with a season's best time of 2:33.03.
The women's 4x200m relay team, consisting of
Diana Boa,
Simone Da Silva,
Kimora Harris and
Alanah Broomfield took the gold with a season's best time of 1:44. The men's 4x200m team consisting of Bass,
Mark Hutchinson,
Brandon Shokour and
Ugata Ebikeme took the gold with a season's best time of 1:32.19. The B team led by first year athletes
Jaxon Hume,
Ian Osakue,
Sydney Adegaye and
Auljay Morris took the bronze with a time of 1:34.20.
Three Lions travelled to Reno for the pole vault summit.
Daniel Gleason was the top York finisher as he ended up in fourth place with a height of 4.90m.
The Lions will be headed to Montreal for the McGill Team Challenge for their next meet next weekend and will return home for the annual York Open at the Toronto Track and Field Centre on Saturday, Feb. 1.
