York University Lions wrestlers
Brea Rodgers and
Bailey Agard won silver medals at the OUA championships on Saturday to lead the women's team to a sixth-place finish in Guelph, Ont., while the men were eighth.
Rodgers won the silver medal in the 59kg weight class in her debut OUA meet, earning the conference's rookie of the year award in the process. She is the first rookie of the year in program history, and the result from her and Agard equals the best ever finish from a Lions women's wrestler at the championship.
Agard's result came in the 51kg division. She was also competing in her first OUA championship after an injury forced her to miss the event last year.
Rodgers won both of her round-robin matches in convincing fashion to reach the gold-medal match against Julie Steffler from the Brock Badgers. She settled for silver after Steffler won the last match 10-0.
Agard's road to the silver medal played out in similar fashion as she went 2-0 in the round robin with a pair of 10-0 victories. She put up a strong fight in the final match before falling 11-2 to Western's Madison Parks, who was ultimately named the most outstanding female wrestler of the meet.
On the men's side, two wrestlers reached the medal round en route to fourth-place finishes.
Paul Nguyen went 1-1 in the round robin to set-up a bronze-medal match against Francesco Fortino, which he lost 10-0, while
Tulio Hsu was 2-1 in the round robin and then lost the bronze by a 10-0 score in the match.
Harrish Satheswaran, competing in the 100kg division and earning a fifth-place result, was also named the recipient of the OUA Student-athlete Community Service award.
With their podium finishes, Rodgers and Agard have qualified for the U SPORTS championships at the end of the month. Their trip will be a close one as the Badgers welcome the best wrestlers from across Canada to St. Catharines, Ont., for the national meet.
