The York University Lions men's and women's track and field teams hosted the annual York Open this weekend at the Toronto Track and Field Centre (TTFC), while some of the jumpers headed across the border for Cornell University's Kane Indoor Invitational.
The women long jumpers swept away the competition across the border as
Leah Jones, who has gone undefeated in the women's long jump for four weeks in a row, left with the gold medal; long and triple jumper
Olivia Henry left with the silver and
Rasheeda Gurley finished with the bronze and a season's best.
At TTFC, pole vaulter
Daniel Gleason hit the U SPORTS auto-qualification standard with a jump of 5.02m. He also finished first amongst U SPORTS athletes at the meet and still holds the number one spot nationally by a large margin.
Levar Russell had a phenomenal weekend as he finished first in the men's 600m where he ran a season's best and OUA time of 1:21.11. Russell also came third amongst the U SPORTS athletes who competed in the 300m with a personal best and OUA qualifying time of 35.28.
Five other male Lions finished the 300m with a personal best time, including middle distance runner
Abdiaziz Ali who also won the bronze medal in the 600m with a season's best time of 1:22.51.
The men's 1000m saw a plethora of personal bests led by second year
Philip Costa who ran a time of 2:38.47.
The men's 4 x 200m relay consisting of
Zeon Bass,
Mark Hutchinson,
Tohma Van Bergen and
Ugatua Ebikeme ran the fastest time they've run all season with a time of 1:29.88.
The women's side saw a total of 17 OUA qualification standards, 17 season's best and seven personal bests.
Holly Taylor, who has been dominant all season, finished first in the shot put with a throw of 13.57m. She also came third in the weight throw with a distance of 16.21m.
Monique Simon-Tucker finished amongst the top U SPORTS athletes who competed in the women's 60m with a time of 7.71. While
Nicolette Witherspoon finished third amongst the U SPORTS athletes in the women's 300m with a time of 41.67.
Along with finishing with a total of 17 podium finishes, the Lions were also able to collect 46 season's best performances, 32 OUA standards and 17 podium finishes, and one U SPORTS auto-qualification standard.
The Lions will be splitting two ways next weekend as they head to Hillsdale College in Akron, Ohio, and Windsor, Ont..
