Tuesday was a big night for York University Lions defender
Taylor Davison as she made U SPORTS history, becoming the highest drafted player from the league when she was selected fifth overall by the Toronto Six in the 2021 National Women's Hockey League (NWHL) Draft.
She was one of three U SPORTS players selected among the 30 total players drafted by the NWHL's six member clubs over the five-round process. All 30 picks were introduced live on Twitch for the first time in league history.
Davison is a local product from Oakville, Ont., who came to the Lions in 2016. She began her career in impressive fashion, earning OUA East all-rookie team honours after tying for 12
th overall in OUA scoring by blueliners. She has since played in every game for the squad and had her best season in 2019-20. That year, she led the OUA in points by a defender with 23 (four goals, 19 assists) in 24 games, recorded a hat trick in the regular season, had six multi-point games and was named an OUA first-team all-star for the first time as the Lions finished with the OUA silver medal, the program's best result in 22 years.
Davison's selection was announced by
Angela James, an assistant coach with the Toronto Six who was one of the first three women inducted into the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Hockey Hall of Fame in 2008 and one of the first two inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2010.
