Box Score The York University Lions field hockey team was back in action Sunday afternoon looking to continue their dominant start to the season. The Lions hosted the Queen's Gaels at Alumni Field in the back half of a home-and-home series.
The Lions beat Queen's 3-0 on Friday in Kingston, and could sweep the season series against the Gaels with a win on Sunday. Going into this game, York had an impressive 4-1-1 and three points ahead of the Toronto Varsity Blues atop the OUA East table.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Lions generated some chances early, most notably from Polly Campbell and Frankie St. Louis, but were unable to convert, and the game remained scoreless.
- York earned a penalty corner in the 7th minute after a wave of blistering attacks, but was unable to capitalize on the opportunity, as Prava Sandhu's double-shot was blocked by the Queen's defenders.
- The Lions hard work finally paid off in the 11th minute, as Lexi Hannah was able to score from inside the penalty area following an array of successful attacks from the flanks. That made it 1-0 Lions.
- That was the only goal of the first quarter. In fact, York held the Gaels shotless through the opening 15 minutes.
- Early in the second, York earned a penalty corner but was unable to double their advantage.
- Following a quick break at the other end of the pitch, the Queen's earned its first penalty corner of the match, giving them a chance to equalize, but the shot was well wide of the net. It remained 1-0 Lions at the break.
- The Lions had several quality looks in the 3rd frame, including a powerful strike from St Louis, but were unable to extend their lead.
- At the end of the third quarter, the Lions' electrifying display continued as their short passing play resulted in a tap-in from Alyssa Brooks, who doubled the Lions lead to 2-0.
- In the fourth quarter, the Lions put the game to bed as Hannah registered her second goal of the match, making the score 3-0.
- After a series of well-controlled passes inside the Gaels' half, Brooks added her second after her shot went off a Queen's defender and in to make it 4-0.
- The Lions then scored two late goals at the end of the fourth quarter, St. Louis made it 5-0 and Mackenzie Gee rounded out the scoring to secure a 6-0 win for York.
LOOKING AHEAD:
