Haylie Kirkpatrick scored the only goal of the game during the first period to clinch a close game between the York University Lions women's hockey team and the Western Mustangs.
Emma Wedgewood made 17 saves to keep her team in the game, but the Lions weren't able to beat her counterpart in the Mustangs goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Mustangs opened the scoring at 15:53 of the first after a shot stopped by Wedgewood bounced into the path of Haylie Kirkpatrick, and she scored from close range after an assist by Alyssa Wouda.
- The second period showed signs of improvement from York, nearly scoring on several occasions while being kept in the game by Emma Wedgewood and a fantastic last gasp block from Sasha Brucker.
- The final period was end to end with great chances for both teams. York had the lion's share of opportunities after pulling Wedgewood with 2:36 left, but Western stood their ground and preserved the win.
LOOKING AHEAD
York has a chance to redeem their close loss when they return Saturday, Oct. 29 to Canlan Sports at 2:15 pm to face the rival Toronto Varsity Blues.
