The York University Lions wrestling team kicked off its season on Sunday at the McMaster Invitational tournament in Hamilton. They were joined by nine other OUA teams, as well as Concordia University and the University of Alberta.
 
The highlight of the day came from Mahir Sabit, who won a silver medal in the 61kg weight class. He beat Carleton's Shahruk Amin in his first match, and then defeated Cho Sherpa of Brock in the next round. In the semi-final, he dispatched Tim Dao of the host Marauders to advance to the final. There, he was beaten by Guelph's Gregor McNeil, ending his shot at victory.
 
There were some other good performances from Lion men, including fourth-place finishes from Jordan Soloman (72kg) and Connor Walsh (82 kg). Solomon was victorious over Western's Mahamed Qasim and McMaster's Bilal Naous on the consolation side of the bracket, before falling to Eli Fines of Alberta in the bronze medal match.
 
Walsh, meanwhile, had wins over Thomas Meandro of Queen's Mohammed of McMaster, before dropping a semi-final match to Lakehead's Chase Birch. He was then defeated in the bronze medal bout by Jordan Wiley of Brock, and had to settle for fourth. 
 
On the women's side, Willow Mortan finished with a bronze in the women's 56kg weight class.
 
Next up for the Lions is the TMU Open, which will take place on Saturday, Nov 12.
