The York University Lions women's hockey team has got themselves in the winning column after a successful weekend away as the enter the last two weekends before winter break. With a game away at Ontario Tech before returning to Canlan Ice Sports to host the TMU Bold, the Lions are set to extend their winning streak.
The Lions headed to Waterloo on Wednesday evening to face the Laurier Golden Hawks, the second seeded team in the OUA West division. York quickly took the lead thanks to Sydney Paulson, who wasted no time in finding the back of the net in the first period. York shut down the Golden Hawks heading into the first intermission, and their game plan remained the same in the second period. Lexy Anonech found open ice in front of her on a penalty kill, taking control of the puck, she made her way down the ice to slot home a short-handed goal and extend the Lions lead heading into the third 2-0. First-year Kaitlin Teixeira joined in on the scoring action, solidifying a 3-0 lead early in the third period on a power-play. Laurier managed to break through and get their only goal of the game with little time remaining, but York's 30 shots to Laurier's 19 was enough to handily take a 3-1 victory on the road.
York had the fire underneath them as they headed back to Waterloo on Saturday to face the Waterloo Warriors. In a game full of action and a tight scoreline, York's Sydney Hiltz struck first just 2:40 into the first period, but the game was quickly tied up less than a minute later. Both teams locked down their defence for the rest of the first period, heading into the second 1-1. Paulson found the back of the net 29 seconds into the second period, before Jennifer Shaw extended the lead on a power play opportunity. The Warriors did not let up, equalizing the game once again to head into the third period tied 3-3. York was relentless in the final period as Lola Massey drove to the net off the opening face-off scoring a mere 8 seconds into the third period, but they weren't done yet. Julia Cuccia and Natalie Mamone scored 6 seconds apart on short-handed opportunities to secure a 6-3 victory.
