Just two weekends after facing the Nipissing Lakers in a home-and-home series, the York University Lions are gearing up for another home-and-home face off with the Lakers. On a two game winning streak, finishing last week with an upset of the Varsity Blues and then dominating the Windsor Lancers, the Lions are on the edge of the playoffs.
It was the Lions who took the lead in the first period at Varsity arena against U of T on Thursday evening.
Ava Ricker-Singh scored her first goal of the season capitalizing on a power play opportunity with the help of teammate
Alexa Giantsopoulos. Leading 1-0 into the second, the Varsity Blues sought redemption and scored quickly into the period to carry out a 1-1 scoreline into the last 20 minutes. Toronto took the lead midway through the third, but the Lions were relentless as Giantsopoulos tied the game, this time Ricker-Singh was the feeding pass along with
Jillian Milligan. Just over two minutes later,
Sydney Paulson found the back of the net on a power play and the Lions earned a 3-2 victory.
Back to Canlan for Saturday night, York was all over the Windsor Lancers.
Emma Wedgewood's eight first period saves prompted her team to get one for her, as
Kaitlin Teixeira scored her first of the game thanks to an assist by
Sydney Paulson. A 1-0 lead into the second, the Lions wanted more and Giantsopoulos was there to provide as she scored her sixth goal of the season and second goal in two games. Teixeira wanted to seal in the Lions victory which she did with just 10 seconds remaining on an empty net goal, adding her second goal of the game for a 3-0 York victory.
