The York University Lions field hockey team took on the Victoria Vikes on Day 1 of the Field Hockey Canada U SPORTS Invitational Championship on Thursday afternoon in Charlottetown, P.E.I., in a rematch of the 2024 gold medal game that was played at York's Alumni Field last November. The Lions entered the tournament after being crowned OUA champions this past weekend, but knew they were in for a tough test against the seven-time defending Canada West champions from Victoria.
York created the best opportunity of the first half in the opening quarter. Elise Piper delivered a sharp pass to Jewel Lew, who fired a shot from the edge of the circle that was blocked. Abby Thompson pounced on the rebound, but her attempt was also denied, keeping the match scoreless heading into halftime.
Chances were difficult to come by in the second half, as the two defensive-minded teams each kept the other at bay for much of the afternoon. Neither side was able to break the deadlock and the game ended in a tie.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Lions continue their quest for gold on Friday when they face host UPEI Panthers. Note that game time has been changed to 1:30 pm, and it can be streamed on the CBC Sports YouTube channel.
