The York University Lions wrestling programs successfully hosted top talent from across the country this past weekend at the 2025 York Open. Competing against a field of 30 teams, the Lions delivered a cohesive and strong collective performance to finish an impressive ninth place overall in the standings.Â
The Lions were anchored by outstanding performances that resulted in multiple podium finishes. The top point scorer for the team was Abina Dushyanthan, who dominated the Women's 90kg bracket to secure a Gold Medal (1st place), contributing 10.0 valuable team points. Adding another medal to the tally was Prabhleen Randhawa, who earned a Bronze Medal (3rd place) in the Women's 65kg division with a 5.0 point performance. These results, alongside a sixth-place finish from Mina Stewart in the 50kg class, powered the women's collective effort.Â
The men's team also showed strong consistency, with three wrestlers securing key placements just off the podium. Andrew Lewis-Garraway (57kg), Iman Aliyev (82kg), and Lawrence Dimaria (100kg) each battled their way to a fourth-place finish, with each athlete adding 3.0 points to the team's total. Completing the scoring for the men was Paramveer Tiwana, who secured a sixth-place finish in the 76kg division. This combined depth and consistent scoring across both programs ensured the Lions finished in the top third of all competing universities.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Lions wrestling team will seek to build on this collective success in their next competition. The team prepares for action at the Pat Bolger Open on Sunday, November 16th, as they continue their busy fall schedule.
