The York University Lions women's hockey team will host a special awareness and fundraising game in support of the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls campaign on November 27th at Canlan Ice Sports – York.
The event coincides with the international 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, which runs annually from November 25 (the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) to December 10 (Human Rights Day). This event will be partnered with The Centre for Sexual Violence Response, Support & Education events for the 16 days. The Lions are using their platform to raise awareness about gender-based violence and to support local initiatives that provide critical resources to survivors.
Donations made to the link in their Instagram bio (@yorklionswhky) will go toward the North York Women's Shelter (NYWS). NYWS is a dedicated anti-violence emergency shelter providing safe accommodation and wraparound support to women, trans, and non-binary survivors and their children and pets. Survivors have a safe place to stay, an expert team of advocates to support them in their journey, transitional housing support, a culturally diverse food program, and access to individual assistance related to physical and mental health, employment, training, finances, parenting, and more. NYWS operates to support victims of violence in their journey towards safety and stability. They believe everybody, regardless of their gender, deserves to live without fear of violence.
The game will feature the Lions facing off against the Carleton Ravens with puck drop scheduled for 3:15 pm. Fans are encouraged to wear white, the official colour of the campaign, to show solidarity with survivors and support the global effort to end gender-based violence.
In addition to the game, The Centre for Sexual Violence Response, Support & Education will host an information table in the arena lobby, offering educational materials and resources for students and community members. The evening will also include a short pre-game ceremony recognizing survivors and emphasizing York's ongoing commitment to fostering a safe and inclusive campus.
This event aims to bring together sport, community, and education. It is an opportunity to learn, reflect, and take action against all forms of gender-based violence.
The York University community, students, faculty, staff, and alumni, are all encouraged to attend and support the cause. All York students, staff, faculty, and alumni will receive free entry to the game.
