The York University Lions wrestling team wasted no time establishing themselves as a force in the 2025-26 season, securing a strong second-place finish in the men's competition at the McMaster Invitational in Hamilton on Sunday, Nov. 2. Competing against a robust field of 30 teams, the Lions accumulated 23 team points, finishing just shy of the top spot held by the Brock Badgers (27 points). This impressive early-season performance immediately sets up a high bar for the Lions as they contend with the province's top university programs. 

The team's success was anchored by a stellar individual performance in the heavy weight classes. Samuel Awonuga delivered the biggest triumph of the day for the Lions, powering his way to a gold medal finish in the 125kg weight class, single-handedly earning a crucial 10 team points for York. Adding to the medal count was Yahya Akar, who secured a silver medal by placing second in the highly competitive 65kg division, contributing another 7.0 points to the team's total. 

Furthermore, the Lions demonstrated valuable depth as two other wrestlers secured key placings. Wesam Sa'ed finished fourth in the 82kg division, and Lawrence Dimaria also placed fourth in the 100kg weight class, with each athlete earning 3.0 team points. This collective effort highlights the depth of talent across the roster. 

The strong opening on the mats sets out a positive tone for the team as they head into a demanding November schedule, which continues next Saturday, Nov. 8, when they will enjoy the home advantage as they compete in the York Open.
