After an OUA championship that saw the York University Lions track & field team take home five medals, the three Lions to win gold and silver medals also assume the distinction of being an OUA all-star.
Arwin Mathivathanan and Tamarri Lindo won gold in the triple jump and 60m hurdles, respectively, earning them first team honours. Thrower, Jeremy Elliott, meanwhile, finished second in the men's weight throw, with his silver medal placing him on the all-OUA second team.
Mathivathanan, a second-year kinesiology & health science student, took home the triple jump gold and set a York record in the process. His top jump of 15.44m broke the previous mark of 15.34m set by David St. Bernard at the 2008 U SPORTS (then CIS) championships. His jumps at the OUA and U SPORTS championships last year of 14.91 and 14.69 are also among the 10 best in Lions history, ranked sixth and seventh, respectively.
Lindo, a second-year health studies major who took home York Open with a 7.96m run to qualify for the U SPORTS championships, set another national standard en route to gold at the OUA championships. He slightly outdid his York Open-winning jaunt, clocking in with a 7.94 second win. With those two runs, plus his bronze-medal winning 7.91-second race at the 2024 OUA championships, he now has three of the top 10 runs in York 60m hurdle history, slotting in fourth, fifth and sixth all-time.
Elliott, a fourth-year kinesiology & health science major, stole second at the OUA championships in weight throw with a 16.74m toss. That toss was slightly shy of the 17.04m throw he made at the York Open, which slotted him fourth on the York all-time weight throw list. However, it did surpass Drew Erskine for fifth on the all-time list, giving the Waterdown Ont., native the fourth, fifth and seventh-best throws in Lions history. The silver medal is Elliott's first piece of hardware at the provincial or national level, while the 16.74m heave is his best at an OUA or U SPORTS championship.
