It was a sterling silver day for York University Lions men's 60m hurdler Tamarri Lindo on Day 2 of the 2025 Biosteel U SPORTS Championships in Windsor.
The second-year health studies major started out his afternoon by winning the opening heat in the preliminaries, posting the top time of all runners at 7.90, to advance to the final. In that final, the Toronto, Ont., native stayed stride for stride with the leader, but came up just short to Michel Gregory of the Sherbrooke Vert et Or, missing out on gold by just two one-hundredths of a second. Lindo's 7.86 second sprint is a pick up of half a tenth from his bronze medal-winning 7.91 second jaunt in 2024.
Elsewhere on Friday, rookie jumper Tristan Boateng narrowly missed out on a podium placement in his first national championship. The Ajax, Ont., native finished in a tie for second in the men's high jump competition, his best jump coming with the bar at 2.09m. However, he placed fourth in the final standings based on his two failed jumps at that height, while the two jumpers who also topped out at that height did so on their first attempts.
York thrower Jeremy Elliott began the day for the red and white with an eighth-place finish in the men's weight throw. His top toss of 16.69m was a gain of nearly a tenth of a meter from his 2023 throw of 16.61. However, a crowded field of competitors meant the veteran thrower from Walkerton, Ont., finished more than a meter short of a medal.
Saturday's final day of the championships is the busiest of the weekend for York. It kicks off at 2:30 pm with the women's 4x200m relay finals featuring the foursome of Janae Brown, Charlotte Murchison, Hillary Ojo and Alexandra Quaidoo. The Lions men 4x400m relay team, featuring Daniel Bruke, Nathanael Taffese, Matthew Richards and Alex Di Florio, will race at 3:45 and 4:00 pm, respectively. Prior to the 4x400 relays, however, jumpers Arwin Mathivathanan and Williams Kalu will compete in the men's triple jump at 2:35 pm. All the action is available live on CBC Gem or the CBC Sports YouTube channel.
