The York University Lions women's hockey team returns to home ice this weekend for a crucial double-header at Canlan Ice Sports York.
The action kicks off Friday at 7:00 pm against the Nipissing Lakers, for their first meeting of the 2025-26 season. While the Lakers secured a 4-0 shutout early in the 2024-25 season, the Lions proved their resilience in the rematch with a gritty 2-1 overtime victory. History suggests another competitive battle is on the horizon.
Beyond the competitive action on the ice, Friday's matchup is a central part of the Lions Roar for the Cure initiative, run alongside the annual U SPORTS Shoot for the Cure campaign. The money raised from this event helps fuel groundbreaking research that is improving cancer treatments, preventing cancer, and saving lives. On Saturday at 3:00 pm, the Lions shift their focus to the Queen's Gaels. York will be hungry for redemption after falling 3-0 to the Gaels in their previous meeting this season.
Saturday afternoon's game will serve as the program's annual Senior Day. The team will hold a ceremony to recognize graduating student-athletes Lexy Anonech, Abbey McMillan, Sara McLennan, Julianna Duma, Abby Hicks, Alexa Giantsopoulos, and Jill Milligan.
