York University Lions football player Raiden Mastin was named an OUA athlete of the week for the period ending Oct. 11, as announced by the conference on Tuesday afternoon.
Mastin, a first-year linebacker from Chilliwack, B.C., had a breakout game for the Lions in their huge 19-12 win over the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday afternoon. He co-led the team with eight tackles, including a half sack and another half tackle for loss, plus two pass breakups. His half-sack came early in the second quarter on a second-down play which was immediately followed by a blocked punt by his brother, Ridley, which led to the game's first three points.
His other half-tackle for loss came on another key play, a 3rd and two play that ended in a loss of three yards for Gee-Gees running back Souleymane Kamara, forcing a turnover on downs which led to another Lions field goal to round out the scoring. Mastin and the Lions now prepare for the 2026 Red & Blue Bowl, the 56th annual event, on Saturday afternoon at Varsity Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 pm; you can get your tickets at varsityblues.ca/tickets or watch the game live on OUA TV.
