The York Lions Women's Hockey team finds themselves with a fairly calm weekend as they only have one game on the schedule. The weekend prior, the Lions played back-to-back games at Canlan Ice Sports.
Last weekend saw the Lions split their back-to-back with a win and a loss. York beat the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks 2-1 in a shootout on Friday. On Saturday, the Lions then faced the Queen's Gaels but were not as fortunate as they fell to the Gaels 4-2.
On Friday, York will travel to North Bay to take on the Nipissing Lakers. Nipissing is looking like one of the best teams in the OUA so far this season as they currently hold a record of 5-2, good for fourth in the OUA as the Lakers have started the season very well. Nipissing also recently played the Ridgebacks and the Gaels, beating both teams on route to their current two-game winning streak.
Both teams will look to take advantage of the special teams' battle in this matchup. Nipissing has one of the best powerplays in the league, currently capitalizing on a 21.4% rate, good for fourth in the OUA. Interestingly enough, York has the fourth ranked penalty kill in the OUA, killing penalties at an 85.4% rate. Whichever team can take advantage of their special team's unit will likely gain an advantage in this one.
These two teams only faced off once last year with the other game being postponed. That match fared well for the Lakers as they emerged victorious over the Lions. However, the year prior the Lakers and Lions split the season series with a win and a loss each. Friday's game is scheduled to start at 7 PM EST. The game will be available to stream on OUA.tv for those interested in rooting on the Lions.
