Box Score The York University Lions field hockey team battled the Waterloo Warriors to a 1–1 draw on Sunday in a competitive OUA field hockey match.
York entered the game 2–1 after opening the season with a 1–0 loss to Toronto before responding with a 6–0 win over Guelph and a 3–0 victory over McMaster. Waterloo came into the contest 2–0, having scored seven goals and allowing none in their first two games.
Waterloo opened the scoring in the first quarter when Sierra Blackburn found the back of the net to give the Warriors a 1–0 lead. York generated several chances, but Waterloo goalkeeper Grace Miller made key saves to maintain the advantage.
The second quarter featured physical play and several substitutions as both teams battled for control. York continued to press but entered halftime trailing 1–0.
The Lions came out aggressively in the third quarter, creating several scoring opportunities through Kathryn Carlow, Katie Tye, Sabine Keon and Mufarowashe Matambo. York also earned consecutive penalty corners as it increased the pressure.
The sustained attack eventually paid off when Carlow scored to tie the game at 1–1.
Both teams continued searching for the go-ahead goal in the fourth quarter, but neither side could break the deadlock. The game finished as a 1-1 tie, .
The Lions return to action Thursday, September 24, when they travel to Guelph to face the Gryphons. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
