The York University Lions women's rugby team welcomed the reigning OUA champion Queen's Gaels to Alumni Field for their home and season opener on Saturday afternoon.

The Lions had their work cut out for them against a Gaels team that has won three of the last four OUA titles. The Lions kept right with the visitors early on, but the Gaels broke the tie around the 12-minute mark on a Kennedi Stevenson try and a convert from Tatum Lougheed to make it 7-0.

Syd Woodcock put three first half tries on the board for the Gaels on their way to a 52-0 halftime lead. The Lions would battle but ultimately couldn't break the shutout, missing a penalty goal opportunity along the way. Queen's' Kyleigh Chandron and Jiggy Schonfeld would both score three tries in the second half, while Lougheed knocking through 13 of her 18 conversion attempts in the contest on way to a 116-0 win for the Gaels.

The Lions will look to bounce back next weekend when they travel to Western to take on the Mustangs on Saturday September 12th. Kickoff is slated for 12:00 p.m.
